Artist Statement

Miles Lowry is a visual and sound artist, writer and director. He has been exhibiting paintings and sculptures since 1981. In his early work, Miles explored ceramics but successfully changed mediums to the light-weight yet durable cast cotton fibre. His exhibitions ‘Two Tribes, Rites and Passages’, and his ongoing series of cast figures ‘Crucial Fragments’, established him as one of Western Canada’s most versatile contemporary artists.

After receiving the People’s Choice award at ARTROPOLIS in Vancouver BC, Miles’ work received national television coverage on CBC ARTSPOTS. He is a Founding Artistic Co-Director for Suddenly Dance Theatre in Victoria, BC, where he continues to work in video arts, sound design and new media. Miles has for several years been creating a collection of paintings based on travel, sanctuary and, specifically, his residencies at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig in Ireland.

Further exhibitions ‘Cipher’ and ‘Marks of Devotion’ revealed a significant collaboration of painting and text with Greek calligrapher Georgia Angelopolous. His ‘Saints of Circumstance’, an ongoing collection of cryptic portraits, inspired a televised studio visit.

In 2019, Miles was awarded a fellowship at the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Victoria to create paintings based on the Irish Ogham alphabet, followed by another Irish residency and solo show ‘Letters from the Trees’. In 2020, he presented his solo exhibition ‘Breathing Spaces’ at the Massey Gallery, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, which reflected a fresh attention to landscape on the edge of abstraction. Recent participation in group exhibitions in the USA include ‘Painted Words’ at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, and ‘Calligraphies in Conversation’ at the San Francisco Public Library.
